Classification of Flowering Plant

Flower gardening is an invigorating and productive hobby. This has gained such popularity because flowers can make your lawn and entire home look more enticing. The plants that have the ability to produce ornamental flowers transform severe landscapes and modify the outlook.

Choosing the appropriate flowers for your garden is a big aspect, and there are many varieties of them available, so you may get confused. It is easier to select the types of flowering plants if you establish the criteria such as colours, fragrance, blooming period, height, maintenance, and the category they belong to.

Types of flowering plant

Flowering plants are categorised into various groups. Once you have been acquainted with these groups, you can consider planting and cultivating them as per their life cycles. There are three main classifications of flowering plants: perennials, biennials and annuals.

The easiest definition to spot the differences among these classifications is:

- Perennials flower for at least two years.

- Biennials need two growing seasons to complete their life process. They grow and mature in the first season, then they flower in the second season, then die.

- Annuals are raised, from seed, grown, set seed and die, all within one year.

Soil preparation is essential for perennials since these are not relocated. Perennials need a lot of pruning and nourishment. On the other hand, annual plants complete the cycle in one year and need to be replanted. However, annual flowers have the capacity for self-reseeding. Soil preparation should be done in advance for both annuals and perennials. Annuals are less selective, although growing conditions are always a significant factor. The same rules as perennials apply to biennial flowering plants.

Planting categories

The flowering plants are further divided according to their planting needs. However, this is not the scientific classification system of flowering potted plants.

Summer bedding plants, such as antirrhinums, are sown or planted out in late spring for a summer or autumn display of beautiful flowers. Spring bedding plants like wallflowers are usually set out in flower beds in the autumn to provide colour and interest to your flower garden in the spring. Herbaceous plants do not develop woody stems. A herbaceous border can consist of annuals, perennials or biennials. When shrubs are present, it is called a mixed or shrub border. Other groupings include classification by scent, flowering season and colour.

Hardiness rating

Many flower garden plants have been introduced all over the world in the coming years; a lot of them come from warmer climates and are grouped according to their ability to survive.

Hardy plants, which can be, annuals, perennials or biennials, are those that can be grown outside and can survive the harsh winters. Half-hardy plants, which also include annuals, perennials and biennials, need some form of protection to survive the winter unharmed.

Think about the growing space. There are floral varieties that should be covered fully or partially. Others require complete exposure to sunlight, while some need frequent watering more than others.
